A large-scale boom in the oil and gas industries has Western Australia set to offer thousands of new job opportunities.

The International Energy Agency have forecast that Australia will become the world’s largest gas supplier in the world in the years to come. Predictions show that nearly 70 percent of all gas produced in Australia will exported globally.

APPEA chief operating officer Stedman Ellis said that, based on WA’s share of production, this could generate between 5500 and 8250 local jobs.

“The full opportunity of establishing WA as a global LNG hub could be even higher because additional jobs would naturally come from increasing capacity or exporting services to other States and countries or other industries,” said Ellis.

There is a big push happening to get multinational engineering and logistics companies to officially make Perth their southern headquarters, which would result in thousands of jobs in sites like WA’s North West Shelf, Gorgon, Wheatstone and Pluto.

Companies like Woodside are already developing projects in order to meet this need.

Woodside have also entered into three binding domestic gas sales and purchase agreements for 80 petajoules over ten years.

Their Burrup Hub project will create a regional LNG hub on the Burrup Peninsula, involving development of some 20 to 25 trillion cubic feet of gross dry gas resources from the Browse, Pluto and Scarborough gas fields (based on current reserves) processed through proven existing LNG facilities ‒ Pluto LNG, and the North West Shelf (NWS) Project.

This will take advantage of the expected global LNG supply gap from the early 2020s, enabling them to supply domestic and export markets, while our Australian economies and communities will benefit from the increased jobs and revenue for decades to come.
